The federal Liberals have been taking a beating in public opinion polls amid the WE Charity controversy.
A Canadian politics professor says Justin Trudeau won’t likely step down but there are questions about who would take over as leader if he did.
Mount Allison University’s Mario Levesque says deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland is currently the only obvious choice.
“She wants to eventually lead the party and would be prime minister. But at the same time, tying everything around Justin Trudeau and supporting him and backing him … and wholeheartedly and enthusiastically backing him, I think brings her down a few notches,” he says.
Levesque says no other Liberal MP has the same kind of publicity or recognition that Trudeau has which gives him the upper hand in the party.
He feels the Liberals should keep their eyes on the Conservatives who will be choosing a new leader later this summer.
Levesque adds that Trudeau should be especially concerned about Peter MacKay who has a lot of political experience and knows the country well.
