The premier said the prospect of an election is about having stability in government.
Blaine Higgs said New Brunswick is facing a lot of challenges with more aspects of the economy reopening, a new school year and a potential second wave of COVID-19.
He understands his colleagues on the other side of the house not wanting an election.
“I don’t want an election either but, I don’t want to leave the government exposed to three byelections and they are saying we must have those,” Higgs said.
Higgs said he’s working to protect democracy and to ensure the government has stability so we don’t find ourselves in chaos unnecessarily.
“And so for me, ‘do we have the opposition take advantage of the [situation] when the province is at its weakest or do we plan it so we can control and manage it?'”
Higgs said we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of what may be coming adding the next six months could be more difficult because we don’t know what is next.
