The leader of the People’s Alliance of New Brunswick says he is optimistic an agreement can be reached to avoid a general election during the pandemic.
Premier Blaine Higgs sent a letter to the three opposition leaders Monday asking them to sign an agreement not to trigger an election before 2022 or until the pandemic is over.
In his response, People’s Alliance leader Kris Austin says he looks forward to discussions with Higgs and the other leaders to deliberate on some of the ideas.
“But in the unfortunate event [an agreement] cannot be reached, I still believe it is important to respect the decision of voters and allow the democratically elected legislature to continue to operate within its four-year mandate,” wrote Austin in his response, which was posted to Facebook on Monday evening.
Austin said he sees no need for a general election at this time, adding the “vast majority” of citizens want a continuation of cooperation, accountability and good governance.
He said he and his colleagues will continue to find opportunities for a collaborative approach.
“It must be stated, however, that we will not compromise our fight for tax reform, language fairness, and fiscal responsibility as these three things are the benchmark for a better future for all New Brunswickers,” wrote Austin.
Higgs has invited representatives from the People’s Alliance, the Liberals and the Greens to meet with him Wednesday to establish the “common ground” needed for further negotiations Thursday and Friday.
My open letter to Premier Higgs…
