Transport Canada says they’ve issued a fine against a bulk carrier for non-compliance in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Speed restrictions were enacted in June 2019 in an effort to protect endangered North Atlantic right whales.
Nine whales were found dead in and around the St. Lawrence last year, and several of them were attributed to vessel strikes.
Bulk carrier Nord Sun, flagged out of Singapore, has been fined $8,250 for not obeying the speed restrictions.
The maximum allowable fine is $25,000.
