Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will call for a break for Parliament now that he’s appointed Chrystia Freeland as his new Finance Minister.
Trudeau says if the Governor General approves his plan to prorogue Parliament, he’ll come back with a Speech from the Throne on September 23rd to set a course for the coming months.
“We need to re-set the approach of this government for a recovery, to build back better, and those are big, important decisions,” Trudeau says, “And we need to present that to Parliament and gain the confidence of Parliament to move forward on this ambitious plan.”
Trudeau denies that this is a ploy to delay the WE Charity investigation or goad the opposition into forcing an election.
“But it is obvious that the Throne Speech we gave eight months ago is no longer relevant for the reality that Canadians are living and that our government is facing,” he emphasizes.
The PM says he’s ensured the investigators into the WE scandal have access to key documents during the break.
