The leader of New Brunswick’s Green Party has unveiled a plan he says will save public transit in the province’s three largest cities.
During a campaign stop in Fredericton on Wednesday, David Coon promised to unlock the federal dollars aimed at improving public transportation that Tory leader Blaine Higgs left on the table.
Coon said if elected, he would immediately dedicate revenue from the carbon tax to offset the $2-million loss in revenue caused by COVID-19.
“Public transit is an essential service for people of all ages in our cities, and an essential part of effective plans to grow our cities, support our seniors, reduce poverty and fight climate change. We cannot lose this public service,” said Coon in a news release.
Fredericton Transit and Codiac Transpo are both forecasting losses of more than $750,000 this year.
Saint John Transit expects a deficit of around $500,000 but has been asked by the city to cut it in half.
