Liberal leader Kevin Vickers came to Saint John on Wednesday and revealed a slate of candidates for the region.
Vickers was asked about Gerry Lowe, the incumbent MLA for Saint John Harbour, who announced Tuesday he was not reoffering.
The Liberal leader seemed unfazed by Lowe’s regret at leaping municipal to provincial politics, which he had called a “gigantic mistake”.
Vickers described Lowe as a “tremendous advocate” for the citizens of Saint John.
“He’s a maverick. 76 years of age. I can clearly understand why he would not want to wander so far from home,” Vickers said.
Alice McKim, a teacher at Saint John High School, will run for the Liberals in Saint John Harbour.
“My heart lives here. Twenty years I have worked here. I have lived on three different streets in this riding. Sometimes I have been down and I had to pick myself back up. It was a hard process, particularly in the last four years. My incredible partner, my children, my friends helped pick me back up. I stand before you today, strong. I am going to be in Fredericton whoever is the government.” McKim said.
Saint John Lancaster candidate Sharon Teare is well known as an advocate for seniors. Teare will run against Progressive Conservative incumbent Dorothy Shephard on the west side.
“Our seniors, not only in my community, across New Brunswick need a voice to speak for them. Looking at my own constituency, we have more vacant businesses than occupied. We only have to look at the Lancaster Mall. The lovely street of Lancaster west is depleting. We need to draw people there,” Teare said.

Jason Hickey is the Liberal candidate in Rothesay.
“We need to band together and fight the government. We need to fight unnecessary elections. I am honoured to be here to be that person to fight for Rothesay and for New Brunswick,” Hickey said.
Phil Comeau will carry the Liberal banner in Saint John East while Tim Jones will try to unseat PC incumbent Trevor Holder in Portland-Simonds.
Both Comeau and Jones were not present at Wednesday’s news conference on the Saint John waterfront.
