Police in Saint John are warning about a new employment scam making the rounds in the city.
Someone who appears to be a prospective employer is contacting people who have placed resumes online and offering them a job.
“Personal information is requested and once provided, you are ‘hired’ on a probationary basis,” said police in a news release.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the victim is asked to use their own bank account to manage the company’s finances.
Victims are then sent money and are asked to forward it to a client by Bitcoin or gift card, said police.
“The money received is either from compromised accounts or other fraud victims. Your bank may lock down your accounts if they detect fraudulent activity in order to protect you and their institution,” said police.
