New Brunswick’s Liberal Leader has committed to immediate action for affordable housing in the province.
Kevin Vickers made a stop in Moncton today.
He says if elected, his goal is to eliminate a problem that is getting worse due to inaction by the Higgs government, “It will be my goal to the greatest extent possible to eliminate poverty in my province in the next four years. We will move immediately to built badly needed affordable housing in our province.”
Recently, the Trudeau government offered up to $49 million in order to accelerate affordable housing projects. Vickers says Blaine Higgs’s government is the only provincial government who turned down the offer, “Blaine Higgs sat on his hands and stalled projects that would better the lives of New Brunswickers around the province.”
Vickers says the previous Liberal government signed a 10 year housing agreement with the Federal government to address this issue, “If elected, the Liberal government will immediately begin implementing the agreement to protect, renew and expand social and community housing.”
The Liberal leader also says he will commit to working with Rising Tides in Moncton, to find 125 affordable housing units over three years.
“The City of Moncton already announced that they would invest $6 million over three years, but the Blaine Higgs government did not step up to help some of the most vulnerable people of our community. Vulnerable New Brunswickers are being left behind by Mr. Higgs on a number of issues, including affordable housing.”
“We are an election that no one wants. An election that was not needed because Higgs wants more power to implement his agenda. He will ignore social problems like social housing and he is not interested in working with communities on issues like this. If you vote for Blaine Higgs and the Conservatives, you will be turning your backs on the most vulnerable and the most weak in our community.”
