The People’s Alliance of New Brunswick discussed their plans to improve affordable housing on the campaign trail in St. Stephen on Saturday.
Leader Kris Austin said if elected his party would focus on reducing the double tax, which requires property developers to pay both municipal and provincial taxes on rental properties.
Austin claims the double tax gets passed on to those renting the properties.
“New Brunswick is one of the highest-taxed provinces in the country, which is why so many developers will not build and construct new buildings here,” Austin said.
The party says it would also put a freeze on rental rates once the double tax is eliminated.
Austin also used the visit to St. Stephen to introduce the party’s Saint Croix candidate Rod Cumberland.
