A Green government in Fredericton will work to ensure high-speed internet access for all.
Leader David Coon said their plans for the Department of Rural Affairs and Community Development will make this a key strategy.
The party said this new department will be responsible for developing and implementing a regional development policy, support for renewable energy production and the protection and development of agricultural land.
“This department will operate with a decentralized structure and decision-making authority to support regional development and will be financially supported through the Northern Fund, which we will re-establish with other funds specific to the needs of the regions,” said the Green leader. “New Brunswickers want to be more self-sufficient and we can. All we need to do is tap into the creativity and vital energy that already exists in our communities.”
During a campaign announcement in Nigadoo, N.B. on Tuesday afternoon, Coon said he believes communities should set their own path toward economic development building on their unique geography, assets and culture.
“With the provincial government supporting them with appropriate policies and funding.
That’s the role for the provincial government in regional economic development, not to run the show,” Coon said
Coon said if the private sector is not willing to provide high-speed internet within six months of a Green government taking office, the government will take over.
He said his party will close the “digital divide” in New Brunswick adding the time for “half measures is over, it’s time for action”.
