New Brunswick’s Liberal party wants to help encourage students to stay in the province for their post secondary studies.
Leader Kevin Vickers says, if elected, his party will make education more affordable and accessible.
“Changes to the tuition programs by the Higgs government have made colleges and universities less affordable for average New Brunswickers. To address this, a Liberal government would eliminate the provincial share of interest for New Brunswickers.”
Vickers says keeping students in our province, will help to boost our economy, “By investing in these students and giving them them a little boost they need, we can encourage more people to pursue a secondary education and ensure that they stay home here in new Brunswick. Therefore, boosting our economy and helping our industries.”
Vickers spoke of a young man, who he is currently travelling with, who graduated from post-secondary studies, “He pays about $600 a month on his loan, of which $200 is interest, so it’s the provincial part of that he would get to keep, invest in New Brunswick. It’s going to be more money in their pockets, more money in the economy, and it is going to help us grow the economy, so it’s a win-win situation for sure.”
The Liberal Leader made a stop at the Universite de Moncton earlier today, to make the announcement.
“We believe that getting a post-secondary education should open doors, not make life more difficult,” Vickers says. “Instead of worrying about growing debts, our graduates should focus on building their life, here in New Brunswick.”
