The Conservative candidate for Saint Croix wants to help people, likes to listen and needs the facts.
Former journalist Kathy Bockus is seeking the seat held by her former boss Greg Thompson, the MLA and former MP who died last September.
Bockus said the issues in her riding include the need for jobs, affordable housing and food security,
“Issues with the Milltown Dam. That process is not complete even though people have been debating it on Facebook. I appreciate all their concerns and people voicing them,” Bockus said.
She said some residents want to save the dam for historical reasons and others want it removed so the river can flow freely and fish stock will return.
Bockus has also heard concerns from Campobello Island residents about the need for a year-round ferry.
“What I’d like to see right now until things get settled is maybe extended season and subsidies for the residents so it doesn’t cost them $54 round trip to come and get their groceries. A lot of them are very hesitant about going through the United States,” Bockus said.
Bockus said the people in Saint Croix don’t see the border.
“We see Calais and St. Stephen as one community. People shop back and forth and they have families back and forth. It’s been pretty hard with that border closed that families can’t visit back and forth like they used to,” Bockus said.
Bockus lives on a hobby farm in Leverville, N.B. which is located about 15 minutes from St. Stephen.
The farm includes a dog, a pony, wild turkeys and a few beehives.
