After being wooed by the Green party to run six years ago, Rod Cumberland decided to go for it with a different party.
He hails from Mayfield, near St. Stephen, and was approached to run by the People’s Alliance in the byelection to fill a seat left vacant following Greg Thompson’s passing last year.
“It was a really good fit. If you look at the issues down here, nuisance deer, glyphosate spraying and the forestry file. I have a lot of expertise that I can lend to the people that I love,” Cumberland said.
He became interested in politics after watching government in action while he worked as a researcher for the People’s Alliance, where his previous experience drafting legislation for government was helpful.
Cumberland said he’s been painted as a “one-issue” guy when it comes to glyphosate spraying because he has expertise in it after spending time managing the deer herd.
He spent 22 years working as a wildlife biologist with the Department of Natural Resources.
“Health Canada was looking into the issue. I spent a lot of time reviewing the research and sending them my comments on it. I have read the entire 351 pages of the Health Canada Review,” Cumberland said.
Cumberland said another issue of interest to Saint Croix voters would be the idea of permanent ferry service for the residents of Campobello Island.
