Police in Saint John are inviting homeowners and business owners to take part in their iWatch program.
The program allows citizens or businesses with an external camera to register them on a mappable database with the force.
Chief Stephan Drolet says should a crime take place in your area, officers can reach out and request a copy of video footage.
“It is important to keep in mind that at no time is the Saint John Police Force requesting direct electronic access to your security or computer systems,” said Drolet in a news release.
“The footage provided by the public is done on a voluntary basis and would only be requested should a crime occur near the location of a registered camera.”
Drolet describes the program as “another important piece” of keeping the community and neighbourhoods safe.
“The iWatch registry will assist in reducing time and resources spent on canvassing for information each time a crime occurs,” said a description on the force’s website.
Participants would need to provide their name and contact information and the civic address of where the camera is located.
They would also be asked for details of their system, such as the make and model and what area it covers.
Saint John police say similar programs are currently operating across Canada and the U.S.
