Trevor Holder has been elected provincially eight times following the results of Monday’s election.
The MLA-elect for Portland-Simonds was first elected in 1999 and is now the longest-serving member of the legislative assembly.
In an interview on Tuesday, Holder said he thinks voters appreciated the leadership of Premier-elect Blaine Higgs during the COVID-19 pandemic and the momentum created by their fiscal accountability.
“How we were looking forward towards prosperity in this province leading into COVID. We are very well positioned and I believe the voters of our riding and the voters throughout the province and particularly across southern New Brunswick understood that,” Holder said.
The veteran politician did not find campaigning in a pandemic that unusual.
“It was a different campaign but, some things were not all that different. I mean, it’s not that unusual for me to be out driving around in the riding and jumping out of my car and talking to people. That’s kind of what we did. We made sure that we socially-distanced and wore masks when appropriate and we connected with people,” Holder said.
Holder was asked if he understands why some voters fear a Blaine Higgs majority government means being able to do whatever it wants.
“We made a minority government work for as long as we could. They have a shelf life. I felt personally at the end of it we were spending as much time trying to keep the government together as we were actually doing our job,” Holder said.
