The city’s Safe, Clean Drinking Water Project has hit a major milestone.
A certificate of completion was issued by an independent certifier, meaning the city addressed all deficiencies in providing drinking water to residents.
The $183 million project is considered the largest municipal infrastructure project undertaken in the province’s history.
“Really just great news, and an inspiring accomplishment by the team tonight,” said Mayor Don Darling at Tuesday night’s finance committee meeting.
The project began in 2013, and there are still funds ear-marked for maintenance and Port City Water Partners in the future.
City Manager John Collin agreed with the mayor that city staff did an admirable job delivering results on the project.
“Our residents benefit from safe, clean drinking water, but all of our taxpayers benefit from a capital project that was textbook in terms of its execution,” Collin said.
Despite the project’s hefty price tag, Tuesday’s report showed the project appears to be just over $1 million under budget.
