The RCMP is asking New Brunswickers to be aware of an increase in reports of people being targeted by scammers.
They say the caller will identify themselves as a representative of the Canada Revenue Agency and even the RCMP.
The scammer stating to be from the CRA will tell you there’s a warrant out for your arrest and ask that you go purchase prepaid gift cards and provide the verification codes to avoid legal consequences.
Those claiming to be a member of the RCMP are asking the individual to withdraw large sums of money from their bank account.
If you receive one of these calls, police say not to provide any confidential personal or financial information over the phone or online.
Instead, call the company or institution in question directly using a phone number from a reputable source to verify.
If you have been a victim of fraud, contact your local police and your financial institution.
