The Royal Canadian Legion officially launches its annual Poppy Campaign today ahead of Remembrance Day on November 11.
But due to the pandemic, you may not see a veteran or other volunteer next to poppy boxes this year.
Sunny Brae Legion first vice-president Jim Rodgers says volunteers are not able to be inside many retail locations.
Rodgers says public health guidelines surrounding COVID-19 means that social distancing won’t be possible in many stores.
“We were told by their head offices they hoped that this (pandemic) would end in the near future and we would be able to establish the good ties with those companies that we had prior to COVID.”
Besides the traditional poppy for your lapel, the campaign also offers pins, bracelets and wreaths for sale.
A new item this year is a non-medical face mask with maple leaves and the Legion logo on it.
The money raised during the Poppy Campaign goes directly to support Canada’s veterans.
