2020 brings a new way to honour the sacrifices of veterans through the Remembrance Day Roll-Pass in Saint John.
COVID-19 restrictions mean the traditional ceremony at TD Station is not possible.
Bernard Cormier, chair of The Saint John Remembrance Day Committee, said they came up with a COVID-safe way for the general public to salute our veterans, our military, and our first responders.
Residents are asked to assemble in their vehicles in the parking lot at the Superstore on Rothesay Avenue on November 11th at 12:15 p.m.
Motorists are asked to only use the Thorne Street entrance to the parking lot.
At 1 p.m. on Wednesday, a procession escorted by the Saint John Police Force will make its way to TD Station where veterans, representatives of local military units and first responders will be positioned.
“Veterans, military personnel, and first responders will be formed-up on the front steps of TD Station. Motorists with their passengers will have the opportunity to greet them by turning on their vehicle emergency flashing lights and honk their horns as they pass by TD Station. Passengers are encouraged to wave the Canadian Flag, shout out their thank you’s, and offer them the recognition they deserve,” says Cormier. “Our veterans, active military personnel, and first responders ask for so little, so with this Roll-Pass, we wish to let them know that, not only on Remembrance Day but every day, we thank
them for their service and sacrifices,” adds Cormier.
Motorists who do not plan to take part in the procession are asked to avoid the westbound lane of the portion of Route 100 from Rothesay Avenue (between Russell Street and Seaton Street), City Road (between Seaton Street and Station Street), and Station Street through to Smythe Street.
The entire route of the procession is four lanes and will not affect eastbound traffic.
