Joe Biden has been declared the winner, but there’s still a lot of work ahead before the results are made official and Biden takes office as the 46th president of the United States.
Georgetown law professor Joshua Geltzer says are several deadlines to reach before January 20.
“December 8, Federal Safe Harbor deadline. December 14, the Electoral College. January 3, a new Congress gets sworn in; January 6, the joint session happens under the 12th amendment, and the votes get open, the slates from the different states, and if there’s any dispute left, they’re resolved,” says Geltzer.
The Trump campaign has filed about half a dozen lawsuits alleging voter fraud that also need to be resolved.
Pat Rosensteil, a Republican with the National Popular Vote campaign, says retiring the Electoral College would benefit the entire country.
The system is crashing under its own weight. The truth is that it’s now about the candidates. It’s about the system. The system ends to indecisive results which lend to chaotic messes, and we need to end it for 2024,” says Rosensteil.
Biden was declared the winner on Saturday after winning Pennsylvania and Nevada, four days after Tuesday’s vote.
