A man who pleaded guilty to driving the wrong way on Route 1 and causing a serious crash last October won’t be driving anytime soon.
25-year-old Travis Squires was sentenced to five years in prison and banned from driving for a decade during a sentencing hearing at Saint John provincial court on Thursday afternoon.
In the first part of the hearing last month, court heard that Squires and his passenger, 31-year-old Korey Kinden, reached speeds of 120 kilometres an hour during a high-speed chase on October 7th, 2019.
Blood tests showed Squires and Kinden were both using meth, fentanyl and cocaine and that Kinden was injecting Squires with drugs during the chase.
Squires crossed the median on Route 1 more than once and, while driving in the wrong direction, caused a head-on collision with a white Bell Aliant van, injuring the driver.
He previously pleaded guilty to charges including dangerous driving causing bodily harm and operating a stolen vehicle in connection with the October 2019 crash.
Court also learned last month that Squires drove in the wrong direction on Route 7 during a separate chase in September of this year. No one was injured in that incident.
