Atlantic Canadians placed nearly half a million dollars on 2020 U.S. election wagers according to a spokesperson for Atlantic Lottery Corporation.
Scott Eagles, Manager of Sports Betting at Atlantic Lottery, said elections and other novelty wagers have proven to be a popular option in the past.
It wasn’t the first time ALC has offered several novelty betting options outside of sporting events to its Pro Line players, with previous wagers being offered on the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the Oscars, Grammys and the birth of the royal baby in 2019.
Eagles says the US election brought in more sales than any other single event in ALC history, outside of the annual Super Bowl.
He says sales for bets placed on the 2020 U.S. election were more than 15 times higher than they were for the 2016 U.S. election, adding over 460-thousand dollars in Pro Line wagers were made with ALC on the outcome.
Of note, 59 per cent of the total funds wagered were placed on Joe Biden winning the election, while 66 per cent of those betting expected Donald Trump would win the popular vote.
