The Saint John Sea Dogs have signed 16-year-old forward Simon Hughes to the team.
The P.E.I. native was drafted by the Sea Dogs in the second round of the 2020 QMJHL Entry Draft.
President and general manager Trevor Georgie said the team looks forward to working with Hughes.
“We’re happy to welcome Simon and his family to Saint John,” said Georgie in a news release. “He adds size, skill, and offensive depth to our team.”
“He’s only 16 and hasn’t played or practiced for a number of weeks so we will be patient with him. Our coaching and training staff will work with him over the coming weeks to get him into game shape and help him adjust to the pace and life of a Major Junior player.”
Hughes was previously playing at Mount St. Charles Hockey Academy in Rhode Island.
Last season, he played for the Charlottetown Knights of the NB/PEI Major U18 Hockey League, where he registered 42 points in 38 games.
Hughes was one of 14 QMJHL drafted forwards invited to Hockey Canada’s National Under-17 Development Camp this past summer.
“There’s a lot of excitement towards the team this year and it’s great to be with this group going forward,” said Hughes in the news release.
Hughes is expected to join the team later this week.
