Claudia Hughes and Wendy Lockett are this year’s recipients of YMCA of Greater Saint John’s Peace Medal as part of YMCA Peace Week.
The YMCA Peace Medals are given to people or groups who demonstrate a commitment to peace through individual contributions, without the aid of special resources, made within their local community.
Both women are long-time volunteers with newcomers in the YMCA community.
Claudia Hughes helps welcome newcomers to Canada as part of the Y’s First Friend volunteer program, established in response to the Syrian Response in 2016. She helps First Friend families adjust to life in Canada, helping them with daily activities including trips to local businesses, banking and medical appointments,
Wendy Lockett is one of the first friendly faces newcomers see in Saint John, as part of arrival services with YMCA Newcomer Connections. She invites newcomers into her family, having them over for meals, helping with transportation and showing them the culture of Saint John.
The YMCA of Greater Saint John celebrates the presence of peace in Saint John’s communities during YMCA Peace week, from November 14 to 21, and reflects on the peace-building work that happens all year inside and outside its facilities.
The Peace Medals will be awarded virtually to Hughes and Lockett this Friday.
