It appears the Atlantic bubble has burst.
PEI Premier Dennis King says he has spoken to his fellow Premiers in the Atlantic provinces, and they all agreed it was important to take all of the necessary precautions to keep residents safe.
“We, as Prince Edward Island, have decided to temporarily suspend all non-essential travel to and from Prince Edward Island, meaning we would be suspending our participation from the Atlantic bubble for a two week period. We make this decision today with the hope as the COVID cases are increasing all over, that this is an extra layer of caution and it will continue to allow us to maintain what we have here,” King says.
This takes effect At 12:01am tomorrow morning for PEI.
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey says his province will be taking the same steps, “This is not an easy decision, but as your Premier, as a Physician and a concerned father and citizens, I must do what I promised, protect the best interests of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Anyone arriving in these provinces, will now be required to self-isolate for 14 days.
Furey says, “As we have seen the numbers of infection begin to creep up throughout the Maritimes, our own alarm bells began to sound. I’ve spoken with the other Atlantic Premiers over the weekend. We must be responsive now and address the situation today.”
The closure to non-essential travel in Newfoundland and Labrador takes effect on Wednesday morning at 12:01am..
Premier King adds, “I see this as a temporary measure. We will review this after two weeks and see what the lay of the land is, so to speak. We will monitor the region, we will monitor the country in the hopes we can break the back of this virus one more time.”
Furey says, “We’re doing this to protect the economy and the freedoms we now enjoy. None of us wants another lockdown like the one we have just been through.
