The leader of the People’s Alliance party believes the adjournment of the provincial legislature sends the wrong message to New Brunswickers.
Kris Austin says it basically tells everyone else to go to work, but yet, MLAs are not considered essential, “As far as essential workers goes, I understand Public Health makes recommendations, but ultimately it is government that decides policy. Really, who is essential and who is not, is really the role of government to decide. I can’t see why as an elected official, I’m not considered an essential worker.”
He feels it is a double standard, “It is saying to the private sector, this is what you have to do and then it is saying to us in the House that we live by a different set of standards.”
The New Brunswick legislature adjourned on Tuesday for two weeks amid rising cases of COVID-19.
“There are construction workers working on this building, and I’m sure who are coming in from different parts of the province. You’ve got staff in office places who are working and yet we are adjourning. You look at legislatures across the country who have many more cases than we have who are still continuing to operate,” Austin says.
