The provincial government is following through on its election promise to double conserved and protected lands.
Residents are invited to submit their nominations for the next protected space through an online hub.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada wants to encourage New Brunswickers to get out and take advantage of the opportunity.
Director of Communications Andrew Holland says he gives Blaine Higgs’ government ‘full marks’ for its commitment to preservation.
“They’ve been accessible and they’ve met with conservation groups,” Holland said. “Whether it’s organizations that want Crown land protected, or groups like the Nature Conservancy, that want to protect privately-owned land in the province.”
Holland says the Nature Conservancy does have a few areas they would love to see protected, including an expansion of the Musquash Estuary Nature Reserve near Saint John.
“That’s a really important area on the Bay of Fundy, not only for migratory birds, but bears. It’s an area where we have over 5,500 acres protected right now, so we want to expand on that.”
He also listed areas around the Northumberland Strait and Miramichi River as other options that are important to the provincial ecosystem.
