Air Canada sent a statement on the suspension of flights for Atlantic markets including Saint John beginning on January 11th, 2021.
“We continue to experience significantly reduced traffic due to COVID-19, ongoing travel restrictions and quarantine rules, low seasonal demand and the termination of the travel bubble. As a result, we are suspending until further notice all passenger operations to Sydney, Nova Scotia and Saint John, New Brunswick, beginning January 11. This represents a small subset of the 95 previously planned suspensions disclosed at time of our third quarter results.”
The airline said the decision “was not taken lightly” and they regret the impact on their customers and community partners adding its increasingly difficult to operate in this environment without sector-specific support from the federal government.
Negotiations covering support from the federal government haven’t started yet, it said.
The statement also said Air Canada is carrying less than eight per cent of its normal passenger volumes due to factors beyond their control and “with no horizon for recovery”.
Meanwhile, Fundy Royal Conservative MP Rob Moore offered a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
“Today’s announcement will have a devastating impact on our region. The Trudeau government has failed to outline a clear plan for air travel to safely restart. My Conservative colleagues and I will continue to press the Trudeau Liberals to outline a plan to restore flights to our region and get employees back to work,” Moore said.
