New Brunswick RCMP are offering some safety tips to protect you and your belongings this holiday season.
When you are out buying gifts for family and friends, you should never leave valuables unattended in your vehicle.
“If you have to leave your vehicles, bring your valuables inside or store them in the trunk,” said Const. Hans Ouellette, a spokesperson for the New Brunswick RCMP.
Ouellette said you should always lock the doors of your vehicle, take your keys with you, and park in well-lit areas when possible.
“A little tidbit for people to keep in mind is don’t give thieves an opportunity to do their holiday shopping from your car,” he said.
Around the house, Mounties say it is a good idea to keep your doors locked, even when you are home.
Ouellette said this will reduce the likelihood of people trying to break into your home.
“These are often crimes of opportunity, so even if you’re there, locking your door helps reduce the chance someone is going to spend the time trying to break in,” he said.
You should avoid leaving any valuables in sight and ensure your property is well-lit.
If you are going to be away from home, try to make it look like you are still there, he said.
“Some people have bought timers that they can put on their lights at home, so if you’re gonna be away for any period of time, that’s a good idea,” said Ouellette. “Also keeping lights on in the house, as well.”
“If you can see or if a person can see that there is activity in the house, they are less likely to try to access the house and/or your shed or your garage.”
