Nearly 2,000 New Brunswickers will get the first COVID-19 vaccine this weekend at a clinic in Miramichi.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is being distributed at a clinic Saturday and Sunday at the Miramichi Regional Hospital for priority groups, which include people over the age of 85 and the staff and residents of long-term care homes.
New Brunswick’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Jennifer Russell, was asked if she has concerns about vaccine hesitancy.
She said the recent polling indicates there isn’t much resistance in New Brunswick.
“We were encouraged by the preliminary research and survey information around people’s desire to get vaccinated and I think it was upwards of 75 per cent of New Brunswickers,” Russell said.
Dr. Russell says the ultimate goal is to get 65 per cent of the population vaccinated.
“Between 60 per cent and 70 per cent uptake is what we are hoping to achieve to get ourselves the herd immunity that we want and to be able to function at a green response level,” Russell said.
Dr. Russell said this year would have been “a lot harder” if she didn’t have amazing colleagues, staff and partners who all work as a team.
Countless New Brunswickers have sent Dr. Russell holiday cards this year, including children.
She said they are addressed to ‘Dr. Russell and staff’ because a huge number of “phenomenal” people are working day in and day out to bring the province where we are.
