The federal government won’t pay for you to quarantine after non-essential travel.
After several politicians came under fire for leaving the country over the holidays, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicates you will face consequences for following their example.
Trudeau says the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit introduced in the fall isn’t meant to encourage people to leave the country unnecessarily, and nobody should be vacationing abroad right now.
The warning comes just days before new requirements kick in for travellers entering Canada.
“But if you still decide to travel at your own risk, you will need to show a negative COVID-19 test before you return, and you must self-isolate for two weeks when you get back. You need to take this seriously,” he emphasizes.
He says the country needs to support healthcare workers and the most vulnerable.
“That’s why I was disappointed to find two of our Caucus members who travelled, and why there were consequences in them resigning from their committee roles,” Trudeau adds.
Trudeau he admits he is among the people feeling impatient for more people to get vaccinated against COVID-19. He notes the country needs to ramp up its vaccination program now that we’ve entered the new year.
