PEI’s borders won’t open before January 25th.
At a conference Tuesday, Premier Dennis King said the province needs more time to see how holiday travel will affect COVID-19 cases around the Maritimes before rejoining the Atlantic Bubble.
“The rise in cases we are seeing across the country and around the world suggest we need as a province need to exercise a high level of caution in our province and this region,” he said.
The province’s participation in the bubble was suspended on November 24th, and is re-evaluated every two weeks.
King said like many others in the Maritimes, he is eager to see the bubble re-established, however now is not the time.
Dr. Heather Morris, chief medical officer of health for PEI, agreed with King’s statement, and said the province must remain cautious.
“Currently we are doing well, however we know one super spreader event could change our situation dramatically,” she said.
The province announced one new case of COVID-19 on Tuesday in a female under 19 who travelled outside the province recently. PEI currently has four active cases.
A further review of the province’s involvement in the Atlantic Bubble will be done by January 25th.
