Retailers must be vigilant in fighting cyber criminals.
An expert says the most important assets should be protected first such as a customer list since you can’t protect everything equally.
David Gibbs, senior manager of risk advisory with Deloitte, says front line employees need to be educated about potential cybersecurity threats.
“We’re all too quick to sometimes click on that link or respond to that email. It’s about building trust with some of our providers but also having some awareness over whether we’re expecting that email.”
Gibbs says retailers should ensure their operating systems and software are up to date and fully patched since cyber criminals look there first for vulnerabilities.
As for e-commerce, he says be wary of criminals copying your website and stealing your brand to gain credit card information and leverage fake sales.
Gibbs adds it’s no longer a case of if a cyber attack will occur but when it will occur.
