Nova Scotia RCMP say it has concluded its active search for the five missing crewmen of the Chief William Saulis.
The scallop dragger sent out a distress beacon on December 15, leading emergency rescue crews to search a wide coastal area.
The Chief William Saulis was found last week, after sonar technology located it 60 meters beneath the surface more than two kilometers off the coast of Delaps Cove last week.
A remotely operated underwater vehicle was used to determine the vessel was resting in an upright position.
The RCMP then requested military help in determining whether the scallop dragger was reachable, in the hopes they could search for the missing crewmen.
The Armed Forces determined attempts to reach the wreckage would put divers’ lives at risk, prompting the RCMP to conclude its active retrieval efforts.
One crewman’s body was found shortly after the vessel sank, but the other five have remained missing since.
