The head of Crosby’s Molasses has put his plans to get into the cannabis edibles business on hold.
In 2019 Crosby’s Molasses president, James Crosby, announced that his new company EYG Consumables (“Eat Your Greens”) would manufacture cannabis edibles for the recreational market.
Crosby’s president James Crosby told Huddle back in July 2019 that his decision to start the company came from the desire to grow and diversify in the food manufacturing space.
“A couple of years ago as discussions about legal cannabis started happening, there was a lot of discussion around future smokeless forms of consumption,” said Crosby at the time. “We firmly believe that is the future and that our skills of producing safe-quality food at scale are transferable. We’re looking to take what we do today and replicate it within the cannabis space.”
But now, a year and a half later, Crosby says plans EYG Consumables have been shelved.
In an email to Huddle on Wednesday, Crosby said they paused their 2019 construction plans due to the uncertainty around the cannabis industry during that time.
“Our plan was to wait on the sidelines and see if things settled out at all. The pandemic has only increased risk and uncertainty,” said Crosby.
Though EYG would be a separate business, it’s management services would be contracted from Crosby’s Molasses. In 2019 the company has bought a plot of land at the McAllister Industrial Park where its planned facility would be built. Once it was completed, EYG Consumables would then have been able to finish the final step in the regulatory approval process to operate. It first planned to enter the market with CBD powdered beverages.
“Covid has created strong demand for molasses with people spending more time in the kitchen,” said Crosby. “For now, our limited resources are best focused on our core molasses business.”
