The Cities of New Brunswick Association is supporting calls for government financial support for Maritime Bus.
President Adam Lordon says there is a need for inter-regional transportation and many citizens must travel for essential reasons including access to health care services.
Earlier this month, Maritime Bus announced it was cutting routes, including Edmundston-Fredericton and Campbellton-Moncton.
The reason for the cuts was low ridership and increased operating costs due to the pandemic.
Lordon says The Provincial government needs to provide financial assistance to Maritime Bus services for the following reasons:
- It is the only means of inter-regional transportation existing in New Brunswick at present.
- The loss of transportation service will create a major prejudice to thousands of citizens of our communities in all regions of the province
- Both the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince-Edward Island have already committed to provide the same subsidy asked from New Brunswick
- The subsidy requested is to support and maintain an essential service for thousands of citizens.
