Ice fishers have returned to the Kennebecasis River and firefighters in neighbouring communities want to ensure everyone is staying safe.
Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department Division Chief Shawn White said they don’t recommend people go out on the ice at all, but for those who will, they encourage safety.
“It should be at least four inches thick for walking or ice-fishing, five to six inches thick for snowmobiles or ATVs, and if you are going to bring a car on the ice, which we don’t recommend doing, the ice should be at least eight to 12 inches,” White said.
White said they are also concerned about people travelling at night in unfamiliar spots of the river.
“We need to make sure that people are aware of where they are when they are travelling. There are still open spots in the river,” White said.
White said the Kennebecasis River never freezes completely.
Images of a truck sinking into the ice at Renforth Wharf and a floating ice-fishing shack have been shared on social media this week.
Saint John officials repeated an advisory to the public on Wednesday that Lily Lake in Rockwood Park is still not safe for skating.
