Environment Canada has shifted its special weather alert for Monday evening into a freezing rain warning for southern New Brunswick.
Meteorologist Jill Maepea says we’re in for a ‘mixed bag’ of precipitation, including snow, freezing rain and ice pellets.
“We’re expecting snow to begin very early in the morning Tuesday and it’s expected to change over to ice pellets in the morning tomorrow, and then freezing rain in the afternoon hours,” Maepea said.
Freezing rain brings an increased risk of power outages, as ice accumulates on trees, roads, and power lines.
Maepea says that freezing rain is expected to begin in the mid-afternoon Tuesday and continue for several hours.
Due to the late start, she expects Tuesday morning’s commute should be relatively uneventful, but the commute home Tuesday evening may be more of a struggle.
“It will get really ramped up during the day tomorrow, so the afternoon commute looks a little bit more complicated at this point,” said Maepea.
Unfortunately, tomorrow’s weather alert doesn’t appear to be the only winter weather system facing the province this week.
Environment Canada’s seven-day forecast shows snow or flurries are expected Thursday, Friday and Saturday as well.
“Another system is expected to move in later this week, and it looks very similar to the system Tuesday,” said Maepea. “We are monitoring it, but it looks like another messy end of the week for most areas of New Brunswick.”
