Jervis Bay Branch #53 Legion will add a new functional tribute to its east Saint John veteran’s memorial park this fall.
The ‘Stairway to Service’ monument will feature a set of thirteen granite steps with boot prints to represent soldiers leaving and returning from service.
A rotting staircase at Jervis Bay Memorial Park has prompted Legion Branch #53 to create a monument called the ‘Stairway to Service,’ which will include a set of 13 granite steps.
Saint John historian Harold Wright said they plan to engrave the boot and shoe prints of Saint John men and women on one side of the monument,
“On the opposite side, we’ll have those same footprints coming up the steps returning from military service. This will actually represent both veterans who had served in the past and it can also represent serving people that are still in the military today,” Wright said.
Wright said the names of New Brunswick veterans will be engraved on the risers of the steps.
“We have names now from England, California, British Columbia. The three names we have so far from England are actually three members of HMS Jervis Bay who died when the ship was sunk and our legion branch is named after that ship,” Wright said.
The steps are being cut now and they hope to install the monument this spring and host a dedication ceremony in the fall.
Anyone who would like to have a name added to this new monument can send an email to jervisbay@rogers.com
Engraving comes with a $125 fee and names must be submitted by the end of February.
