The Chief Public Health Officer of P.E.I, Dr. Heather Morrison announced opioids were discovered in a cannabis product related to an accidental overdose.
A Coroner discovered traces of fentanyl, meth, and a synthetic drug called W-18 in the weed product.
W-18 has drawn similarities to carfentanil a drug reported to be as much as 10 000 times more powerful than morphine.
Morrison says anyone that consumes street drugs should be extra careful and take precautions. She also noted that if you’re using marijuana it’s important to ensure it comes from a safe source.
Precautions include carrying a naloxone kit and understanding the signs of an overdose.
Symptoms include includes slow, shallow breathing or no breathing and severe sleepiness or the person is not responsive.
If you suspect an overdose it’s important to call 911 immediately.
