Prince Edward Island chief public health officer Dr. Heather Morrison announced five new cases during a news conference late Sunday afternoon.
The Island now has 18 active cases with outbreaks in Summerside and Charlottetown.
As a result, Dr. Morrison says P.E.I. is entering a modified red alert with schools closing, no gatherings allowed for the next 72 hours and residents are being urged to stay home as much as possible.
Meantime, Nova Scotia saw three new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and now has the same number of active cases as New Brunswick – 38.
Public Health officials recommend essential travel only to and from the Halifax region where new restrictions are in place such as early restaurant and bar closures.
Thousands of people are being tested for the virus at rapid COVID-19 pop-up testing sites in Halifax.
