Public Health announced two new COVID-19 cases Sunday ahead of all health zones moving to yellow at midnight.
The province previously said it would be monitoring a cluster of cases in the Miramichi region, which has seen 13 new cases since the beginning of March, after reporting just nine cases in the preceding year.
One of the new cases found Sunday was in the Fredericton region and is travel related. The other was in the Miramichi zone and is linked to a previous case.
Sunday’s announcement also included a new outbreak being declared at the Edmundston Regional Hospital.
Three healthcare workers have now tested positive as contact tracing continues. Public Health declares an outbreak at a hospital anytime there is a single confirmed case with possible transmission.
Visitation to surgery unit number two at the Edmundston hospital has been suspended as a result of the outbreak.
In a press release issued Sunday afternoon, the province’s chief medical officer encouraged New Brunswickers not to let up their guard.
“We must still remain vigilant especially with the presence of variants that can be transmitted more easily. It is still important to keep your circle of close contacts relatively small and continue to follow public health advice,” said Dr. Jennifer Russell.
She noted asymptomatic cases can still test negative if they are tested before the virus has had enough time to incubate.
There are now 35 active cases of COVID-19 province-wide, and three residents are in hospital, two of which are in the intensive care unit.
