Four people had to be rescued from Long Island after an incident on the Kennebecasis River on Sunday.
Helen Comeau, chief of the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department, said two ATVs were travelling up the river when one went through a large open crack in the ice around 5 p.m.
Comeau said the two passengers got out of the water and made it to a nearby camp on Long Island, about 300 metres away. The second ATV did not go through the ice, she said.
Rescue crews transported the riders, one at a time, back to shore on the Kingston Peninsula, where they were checked over by paramedics.
Comeau said the two riders who went through the ice were “cold and shaken up” from the ordeal.
