Quispamsis teen Cassie McCallum has signed a letter of intent to play with the UNB REDS women’s hockey team starting in the 2021-22 season.
The 17-year-old goaltender is a veteran member of Team Atlantic and the girls’ prep team at Rothesay Netherwood School.
“The women’s hockey program at UNB is trending in the right direction, and I can’t wait to be part of that,” McCallum said in a news release.
McCallum was the top goaltender for the Rothesay Netherwood Riverhawks in 2019-20 and has been leading the team in their limited action this season.
She was the starting goaltender for Team Atlantic at the 2019 U18 Canadian championship and has been part of three gold medal-winning Hockey New Brunswick teams at the Atlantic Challenge Cup.
Sarah Hilworth, head coach of the UNB REDS, said McCallum is one of the region’s top prospects and will be a great role model for other New Brunswick student-athletes.
“She’s a competitive and athletic goalie who will raise the intensity on our team,” Hilworth said in the release. “Cassie comes from a great program at RNS, and her experience as a starter for Team Atlantic, at the 2019 national championship will be something that will help her find success with us.”
McCallum will study kinesiology while attending the University of New Brunswick.
