Batteries in your smoke detectors should be changed every six months.
It’s recommended you do it when the time changes.
Moncton Fire Prevention Officer Steve Richardson says that little extra effort is a great investment, “The old saying, smoke detectors save lives. It’s very cheap insurance to protect your family and valuable, to have that early, early warning.”
Richardson says when you are replacing the battery, check for a date on your detector as well.
“Pull the cover off to change the battery, and on the detector there should be a date. If there is no date on it, get rid of it, because it shouldn’t be there.
“The building code now mandates that there has to be a smoke detector in every bedroom. If there is a hallway outside the bedroom, there has to be a smoke detector there as well. Previously, it was required that every level of the home had to have one. You had to have one in the basement, one on the main floor and if there is a second floor. If something happened, then they would ring on all floors,” Richardson says.
He recommends adding more detectors in older homes, to ensure you have full coverage.
“That little extra effort for safety. You can’t put a dollar amount on safety, and for such a small amount of money, it is a great investment,” Richardson says.”
