The city has awarded $184,000 dollars to 27 organizations in community grants for 2021.
The program received 37 applications totaling nearly $424,000.
Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary was a member of the grant committee, and says they had plenty of worthy applications to choose from.
“The work these organizations do, and the work they do to help others, whether it be young people, or older people, or whatever age, it’s just outstanding,” McAlary said.
This year, Sistema, PRUDE, and the Human Development Council received the most with $15,000 each.
Bee Me Kidz, Outflow Ministries, Saint John Newcomers Centre, Shining Horizons, and Sophia Recovery Centre each got $10,000 from the city.
Councillor Donna Reardon said she’d be happy to see the city offer more funds through the program moving forward.
“All the applications are fantastic so it’s always so difficult to choose,” Reardon said. “If I had extra money, that’s where I would love to put it because that is an investment in people and it makes a real difference in your community.”
The committee considers applications for organizational support, community projects, and special events.
