Broad Street residents were asked to evacuate their homes after a gas line was ruptured Thursday morning.
The incident, near 149 Broad Street, brought emergency crews including Saint John Fire and Police before 10 a.m.
Fire crews on the scene say the line was ruptured by an excavator, and Broad Street between Wentworth and Pitt remains closed to traffic.
Liberty Utilities is in the area to shut off the gas line.
There is no specific timeline on when the area will reopen to traffic, or when residents can return to their homes.
