Contagious COVID-19 variants are raising alarms as federal officials release their latest predictions for the pandemic.
The newest update from chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam warns that the uncontrolled spread of variants like B.1.1.7 could lead to a doubling in new infections.
Figures from the projections show Canada could be seeing 12,000 new cases per day by the end of April if nothing changes.
“With more contagious variants spreading, this model predicts that current community-based public health measures will be insufficient to control rapid growth and resurgence as forecast,” she explains.
She points out variants of concern are circulating in most provinces outside the Atlantic region, and encourages everyone to stop any unnecessary contact with people outside your household.
Dr. Tam reminds you to keep celebrations virtual for Easter, Passover and Ramadan.
