A proposed one-time increase to the federal Gas Tax Fund is being welcomed by municipalities, including the City of Saint John.
The federal government plans to add $2.2 billion to the fund to help address infrastructure priorities in municipalities and First Nations communities.
In the case of Saint John, it would mean an extra $4.6 million to help support capital projects throughout the city.
“Investments of this magnitude go a long way to support the City as a growing community of choice for people to live work, invest and play,” the city said in a news release Friday.
Recommendations for the funding based on the capital budget policy and the community’s needs would be discussed at Finance Committee and Common Council meetings in the coming months.
The proposed bill must still make its way through the House of Commons.
